Thank you for your interest in learning how to improve your singing skills! I've been teaching since 2010; since then, my students have trained in areas of classical, musical theatre, and pop styles, and I have enjoyed preparing them for auditions for Governor's School for the Arts, scholarships, All East/State Chorus, and school/local productions. Lessons are offered in person AND online via Zoom or FaceTime.
I have a degree in Music with an emphasis in Vocal Performance from Tennessee Wesleyan University. During my coursework, I studied in areas of music theory, history, piano, instrumentation, ear training, sight singing, and choral conducting. Even though I'm an educator, I'm always and forever a learner - we are never done learning!
My goals as a teacher are to introduce you to a variety of musical selections, as well as cover skills in practicing effective score study habits, vocal placement, breathing, and gaining confidence while performing. Even for students as young as 10, basic music reading, vowel shaping, breathing exercises and exposure to various kinds of singing material are all part of the journey.
Whether you are an aspiring performer or want to keep singing as a loved hobby, remember that your private voice lessons are just that -- private. They are about you. They are about where you are as a singer and where you would like to be, and I would like to help you get there by setting goals and working together. Private instruction brings such a strong sense of accomplishment and self-confidence when those one-on-one goals are met. Additionally, I want to share in your love of singing, because it is such an empowering (and fun!) thing to do!
2-3 independent practice sessions per week outside of voice lessons
Have a 3 ring binder each week for keeping music organized, as well as notebook paper (or a small spiral notebook) to write down practice assignments for the next week
Understand that music theory, history, and vocal anatomy also play role in their weekly sessions (it’s not “just singing”).
Understand that singing is A PROCESS! There is no corner-cutting in vocal lessons - please trust the process, trust me, and trust yourself!
Punctuality and reliable transportation to and from lessons. Lessons are often taught back-to-back, and tardiness impacts the appointment time for someone coming for lessons right after. Late minutes are not added on to lessons. Additionally, students should not ask to start early if they show up early. We begin at the student's assigned lesson time.
Weekly commitment and making lessons a regular part of his/her schedule
Supportive parents/family
Additional Notes about Lessons & Student Commitment
Students are responsible for attending their lesson every week that I operate. Although there is no contract, the commitment must still be there (remember, a contract means you have to; a commitment means you want to!). The time taken to plan the student's lesson should be respected, therefore the student should make plans to be in attendance.
Lessons are guaranteed a reschedule only when it is communicated beforehand. Lessons are NOT rescheduled if a student forget to attend or is a no-show of any kind, and the lesson is forfeited for the week. Please understand that fees secure their spot in the studio whether the student shows up or doesn’t.
For a full rundown of my studio policy, please contact me directly (kjpaden@gmail.com).
Payments are made monthly, at the first lesson. Contact me directly for further information regarding monthly fees and materials.
